Windows XP SP3 RTM & Windows Vista SP1 Downloads halted

April 30th, 2008 by Karen

Microsoft finalized the code for Windows XP SP3 last week and had planned to make it broadly available through Windows Update yesterday, 29 April. However automatic updates of both Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3 has been halted in the wake of a newly discovered glitch

The problem prevents the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System from working with either operating system update.

Microsoft said in a statement: “In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center”

They continued: “To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS …. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center.”

Microsoft have advised those running Microsoft Dynamics RMS to not install either service pack. The company said a “fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete.”

My initial thoughts are: Why has it taken so long for this glitch to be found, after all Windows Vista SP3 has been available for some time, why wait until the XP SP3 official release date
