Microsoft updates WGA for pirated copies of XP Professional
September 2nd, 2008 by KarenMicrosoft has updated its Windows XP Professional antipiracy tools. Alex Kochis, senior product manager for Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) antipiracy program, said in a recent blog post that the changes to the WGA Notifications software will bring XP Professional in line with Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
Suspected counterfeit copies of XP Professional will now display a black desktop at start-up, if the nackground is changed the display will revert back to black after an hour. In addition, a permanent notice urging users to buy legitimate copies will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
Great move, however a little late coming, I have to ask the question, why is Microsoft finally going after users of pirated versions of Windows XP when the software is not available to purchase any more, are they still trying to boost Vista sales, which is the only Windows retail version available?.
