Microsoft prepares for end of Windows with Midori

According to the IDG News Service, Microsoft seems to be preparing for the day when the Windows client operating system becomes obsolete with a project codenamed Midori, which seeks to create a componentized, non-Windows operating system that will take advantage of technologies not available when Windows first was conceived.Recent reports suggest that Midori is an Internet-centric operating system, based on the idea of connected systems, that largely eliminates the dependencies between local applications and the hardware they run on that exist with a typical operating system

Windows Vista takeup slow by enterprises

A recent survey by Forrester Research Ltd released last Wednesday shows that of the 50000 enterprise users surveyed 87.1% were still running Windows XP, only 8.8% were running Windows Vista which according to Forrester Research Analyst Thomas Mendel covered computers which had been upgraded from older versions of Windows (for example Windows 2000 or 98)

Windows Home Server update released

Windows Home Server is designed as a central store and backup location for files, photos, music and movie media

Microsoft has now released an update to Windows Home Server called Power Pack 1 which includes a number of minor new features including the ability to back up files stored in the shared folders on the server and support for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, more importantly the Power Pack also includes a a long awaited patch for a data corruption bug in Windows Home Server (WHS),

Microsoft warns users of Windows Search auto update

In a post on the Microsoft Update team’s blog, Microsoft advised users that it is planning to release Windows Search 4.0 to Windows Update “sometime in late July.” Windows Search 4.0, features stability and reliability improvements, giving more control to enterprise IT administrators over a users’ access to and use of search facilities.

Microsoft finally sets a date for the automatic download of XP SP3

A report today on the Computerworld web site states that Microsoft will be making available Windows XP SP3 to most users on Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific time through Windows Update.

Microsoft delayed the distribution of Windows XP SP3 because it found a compatibility bug between the operating system and the company’s Retail Management System point-of-sale software, but the Thursday 10 July date seems firm; it was included in the cumulative list of all updates available via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the server-side update tool many businesses use, as well as via the client-side Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update Web-based services.
