Microsoft has re-released one of its August 11 security updates that patched three vulnerabilities in PowerPoint 2003, the presentation maker included with Microsoft Office
According to the revised bulletin published last week, the PowerPoint 2003 patches originally posted to Microsoft’s Download Center were the wrong versions. “While these versions did protect against the vulnerabilities discussed in the bulletin, they lacked other important security and reliability updates,” Microsoft said in the revamped MS08-051 bullitin.

The adoption rate for Vista SP1 has hit record levels according to a recent study by Devil Mountain software. According to the report nearly 86% of Vista users have adopted SP1.
There could be two reasons behind the high adoption rate. The first is that Vista users were unhappy with the release version of the operating system and hope that SP1 will solve most of the problems. The second is that all new computers come preinstalled with Vista SP1.

According to Devil Mountain Software Inc, nearly 35% of the 3,000-plus PCs it examined had been downgraded from Windows Vista to Windows XP.The data comes from the InfoWorld Windows Sentinel project. This is a scheme were participating users install a piece of tracking software on their machines which monitors performance and alerts users to possible problems

Although the site currently has little information, Windows engineering boss Steven Sinofsky stated: “This blog will provide context over the next 2+ months with regular posts about the behind the scenes development of the release and continue through the release of the product.”

Microsoft have re-issued a July fix for a bug that had prevented some network administrators from using the company’s primary business patch management tool to deploy security updates.
The revised patch, which was posted to Windows Update on Tuesday and is now available for automatic download and installation, is designed to address an issue with the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the free add-on to Windows server software that lets companies feed security updates to client systems.

Microsoft today released its largest security patch in 18 months with 11 bulletins, six of which were tagged as “critical,” Microsoft’s highest threat rating, 26 vulnerabilities in Windows, Office, Internet Explorer (IE), Windows Messenger and other software should be patched.

From recent reports it appears that more PC manufacturers are opting to pre-install 64 bit over the 32-bit versions of the Operating System.Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched 64-bit chips for the desktop back in 2003, however several factors have held up adoption of 64-bit computing, even though Microsoft released a 64-bit version of Windows XP back in 2005.
