Windows Vista SP2 is due next April, says report

According to TechARP.com, a Malaysian Web site that predicted several Windows ship dates in 2008, Microsoft will deliver Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) to manufacturing in April 2009, two months after it issues a final test version to users

Flaw found in Windows Vista that could allow rootkits or denial-of-service attacks

Thomas Unterleitner of Austrian security company Phion has found a flaw in Windows Vista that could allow rootkits to be hidden or denial-of-service attacks to be executed on computers using the Windows Vista operating system. Windows XP is not affected.

Microsoft: promises improvements with Windows 7

In a series of recent reports over the past week from Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), Windows 7 appears to be much better than Windows Vista, improvements include using less memory and power than Vista, with improved start up and shut down times. Windows 7 will also recognize connected devices more quickly and accurately with improved driver compatibility

Malware hits patched versions of Windows Vista SP1 and XP SP3

Back in October, Microsoft released a security patch designed to plug a vulnerability residing in the Server Service on Windows systems that could allow remote code execution

In a post this week on the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) web site Christopher Budd urged Windows users that had failed to update so far to do so as soon as possible, he revealed: “We have seen some new pieces of malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability this week. And while so far, none of these attacks are the broad, fast-moving, self-replicating attacks people usually think of when they hear the word ‘worm,’ they do underscore the importance of deploying this update if you haven’t already.”

Another Microsoft update to Windows Update

Microsoft warned yesterday of another upgrade to Windows Update (WU) the service most users rely on to download patches and other fixes for the second time in three months.

In a post on the Windows Update team blog stated: “Over the next couple of months, we’ll be rolling out another infrastructure update to the Windows Update agent (client code) …. This update makes it possible for users to install more than 80 updates at the same time.”
