Gigabyte Technology predicts businesses will Upgrade their PC’s Q4 this year

According Tony Liao, associate vice president of worldwide marketing at Gigabyte Technology small to medium sized businesses may be considering upgrading their computer hardware or replacing older computers with new ones during the fourth quarter of this year to meet the demand for Windows 7 scheduled for release in October

Gigabyte is one of the world’s largest PC motherboard makers and produces a range of products, including laptops and desktops, based on Intel processors and chipsets.

Windows 7 on a netbook via a USB thumb drive

Netbooks also known as “ultra-low-cost PCs (ULPCs)” appear to be growing in popularity, these are a new class of low-end laptops primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing, Microsoft has designed Windows 7 the successor to Windows Vista for this market

In an effort to increase the number of netbooks on which Windows 7 can be installed and increase market sales of the new operating system (OS), CNET is reporting that Microsoft is considering offering its brand new OS on a USB thumb drive!, until now, Windows has only ever been released on CD, DVD, or via download, which is great but most Netbooks have no optical drives to maintain their low cost and with low end processing power downloads can take forever

Windows 7 pre-order sales grab Amazon’s top sales spots in the US

Microsoft introduced their limited time Windows 7 offer on pre-orders of Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional last Friday in the US, Canada and Japan with discounts of up to 50%

The upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium, priced at $49.99 USD, immediately stormed to the top of Amazons .com website bestseller list. The $99.99 USD Windows 7 Professional Upgrade held the No. 2 spot in software.

Researchers say Windows installs updates without permission

Numerous readers of the popular Windows Secrets newsletter have reported that they have watched their computers install updates from the 9 June set of security patches as they have rebooted or when they have turned on their machines even though they have set options in Windows Update (WU), the operating system’s default update service, to require their okay before installing patches, or before downloading and installing updates.

Windows 7 free upgrade program starts Friday

Microsoft has confirmed that it will launch its Windows 7 free upgrade program for buyers of Windows Vista computers on Friday, according to a message on a new company Web site.

“Thank you for your interest. Please return to this site on June 26, 2009,” states the site, Windows7UpgradeOption.com.

Microsoft has been close-mouthed about the program, dubbed “Windows 7 Upgrade Option,” which will offer free or heavily discounted Windows 7 upgrades to buyers of new computers equipped with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate between June 26 and January 2010, these program dates are still to be confirmed.

Microsoft to end Windows 7 RC downloads on 15 August

Microsoft will stop Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) downloads on the 15 August.

Microsoft employee Stephen Rose said on the Windows Team blog today “The Windows 7 RC download program closes on 15 August. After that, you won’t be able to get the download, but you can still install the RC and get a key if you need one”.

The Windows 7 RC was made available back in May, Microsoft have already said that the release candidate will not expire until 1 June 2010, although it will begin automatically shutting down at two-hour intervals starting on 1 March 2010. The final retail version of Windows 7 will launch on new computers on the 22 October.

Users can still download Windows 7 RC and obtain a product activation key from this Microsoft site
